Ventspils municipality ready to accommodate 300-350 Ukrainian refugees in university campus
RIGA, Feb 25 (LETA) - Ventspils municipality is ready to accommodate 300-350 refugees from Ukraine in campus of Ventspils University of Applied Sciences, LETA learned from the city council.
Ventspils Mayor Janis Vitolins (For Latvia and Ventspils) voiced readiness to receive refugees from Ukraine if necessary. Due to the remote studies, there are just a few students living in the student hotel of the university.
If needed, Piejuras Camping place can also be used, offering 60 spots as of Monday and up to 130 spots in a couple of weeks.
In order to provide support to asylum seekers, also private businesses with hotels and guest houses might engage.
As reported, the Latvian government is preparing a special law for the taking in of war refugees from Ukraine.
It is currently unknown whether refugees will arrive from Ukraine and the approximate number, but the Ministry of the Interior estimates that approximately 10,000 people may arrive in Latvia. It is currently envisaged that refugees will be accommodated in hotels instead of in special camps. Some could also live with relatives or acquaintances, Interior Minister Marija Golubeva (For Development) said on Thursday morning.
Latvia might allocate up to EUR 34.7 million on admission and accommodation of possible refugees from Ukraine.
