More than 100,000 volunteers took part in Nationwide Cleanup Campaign this year; most dangerous find - unexploded aerial bomb found in Lake Talsi
RIGA, April 28 (LETA) - More than 100,000 volunteers took part in the Nationwide Cleanup Campaign on Saturday, the campaign organizers' representative Aiva Rozenberga informed LETA. The most dangerous find during the cleanup campaign was an unexploded aerial bomb found in Lake Talsi, which was later disposed of.
The largest number of sites registered for the Nationwide Cleanup Campaign, 53, was in Riga's Kurzeme District and Zemgale District.
The most unusual finds this time were found while cleaning up several water bodies: an unexploded aerial bomb in Lake Talsi, a scooter, broken glass, reinforcement bars, plastic sledges and a sofa in Lake Jugla, bulky steel waste in the River Lielupe near Jelgava. As usual, tires were found in many places, some plumbing and furniture items, and household waste, said Rozenberga.
The organizers of the Nationwide Cleanup Campaign are pleased that about half of the registered cleanup sites saw landscaping and other work for the benefit of nature and the community. In many parts of Latvia, shrub gardens and flower beds were planted, birdhouses were set up, nature trails were cleaned up. The campaign also involved libraries and cleaning up cemeteries, areas adjacent to churches.
According to Rozenberga, kindergartens and schools also took an active part in the cleanup campaign this year, with children and parents working together. The Interior Ministry and several municipalities focused on cleaning up basements with a view to civil safety and security. In several places, bus stops were repaired and repainted.
Many diaspora communities also took part in the campaign, for example, around 100 people turned out for cleaning up Straumeni property in Great Britain, Latvians living in Georgia cleaned up the burial place of scientist Roberts Kupcs in Tbilisi, Latvians in Canada participated in cleaning up the area around Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church in Ottawa, also participating in the campaign were Latvians living in Poland and the United States. This year, 12 embassies in Riga took part in the Nationwide Cleanup Campaign, and their work was coordinated by Irish Ambassador to Latvia Eimear Friel.
