President calls for urgent adoption of plan for economic growth and security of eastern border region
RIGA, Nov 6 (LETA) - President Edgars Rinkevics has urged members of the Latgale Subcommittee of the Saeima Human Rights and Public Affairs Committee to urgently adopt an action plan for the economic growth and security of Latvia's eastern border region.
As the president's adviser Martins Dregeris told LETA, Rinkevics on Wednesday met with the members of the Latgale Subcommittee and Smart Administration and Regional Development Minister Inga Berzina to discuss a draft action plan for the economic growth of Latvia's eastern border region from 2025 to 2027.
During the meeting at Riga Castle, Berzina briefed the president and lawmakers on progress made in the work on the action plan since the previous meeting on March 13. The members of the Latgale Subcommittee shared their opinions and proposals.
At the end of the meeting, the president called on the parties concerned to swiftly assess the lawmakers' proposals, to complete the plan and to move towards its adoption without delay.
The president will call the next meeting in the spring to follow up on the plan's actual implementation, Dregeris said.
As reported, the action plan for economic growth and strengthening security in Latvia's eastern border region 2025-2027 brings combines previously planned initiatives of the Smart Administration and Regional Development Ministry and other line ministries, as well as new proposals to address the challenges of the eastern border region.
The plan aims to promote the strengthening of the eastern border as a matter of security for the whole of the European Union and to secure additional funding specifically for the EU's eastern border countries and regions bordering Russia and Belarus in the bloc's multiannual budget beyond 2027.
