Progressives call on Riga mayor to terminate cooperation agreement with Tbilisi
RIGA, Dec 11 (LETA) - The faction of the Riga City Council opposition party Progressives calls on Riga Mayor Vilnis Kirsis (New Unity) to terminate the agreement on cooperation with the Georgian capital Tbilisi, LETA was informed by the faction.
The faction took this decision in the light of the events in Georgia since the "unfair Georgian parliamentary elections on October 26 and the statements of Tbilisi Mayor and Secretary General of the Georgian Dream party Kakha Kaladze", calling the ongoing protests a "diversion and coup attempt".
"The European Union and several of its Member States, including Latvia, have condemned the Georgian authorities. It is important to emphasize this also at local government level, as the city of Tbilisi is currently run by the same political force that is running Georgia as a result of unfair elections," says Viesturs Kleinbergs, leader of the Progressives' faction.
He believes that Riga should send a clear signal to the political leadership in Tbilisi that Riga does not support this party's attempts to influence democratic processes and move away from European values.
The party group stands in solidarity with the people of Georgia and the people of Tbilisi, who stand for the preservation of democratic values.
Riga has 25 twin cities, including Tbilisi, the capital of Georgia since 2007, which is the result of a cooperation agreement between the Riga City Council and Tbilisi in the fields of trade, economy, science and technology, humanities and culture.
