Riga, Oct 8 (LETA) - A road in Aizkraukle region is currently partially blocked due to an operation to apprehend illegal migrants, the police informed LETA.
In a special operation this morning, the State Police, in cooperation with the State Border Guard, continuously pursuing migrants from the Belarus-Latvian border, detained several dozen illegal migrants and their carriers, who were using a vehicle with imitated police identity coloring for criminal activities.
Traffic is currently partially blocked in Aizkraukle region, Staburags municipality, on the Aizkraukle-Jekabpils road. Latvijas Valsts Celi (LVC) state road manager said on Twitter that there has been a road accident, and only one lane is open for traffic.
The police and border guards are still looking for the driver - a man of the height of 180 centimeters, fair hair and in dark clothes. Residents are asked to report suspicious persons by calling 112, but not approach them.
So far this year, border guards have prevented attempts by 4,614 people to illegally enter Latvia from Belarus. Eighteen persons have been let into the country on humanitarian grounds this year.
The government recently decided to extend the reinforced border security regime at the Latvian-Belarusian border until December 31, 2024. Previously, the reinforced border security regime had been extended until September 12.
