RIGA, Dec 9 (LETA) - Most of the new Covid-19 cases confirmed in Latvia on Tuesday have been recorded in Riga, Daugavpils, Jelgava and Jurmala, according to the data from the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC).

Riga reported 266 new Covid-19 cases, which increased the capital city's 14-day cumulative number of Covid-19 cases to 3,438.

The latest 78 cases in Daugavpils brings the 14-day cumulative number in Latvia's second largest city to 1,085. In Jelgava, the 14-day cumulative number of Covid-19 cases rose to 390, with 30 cases registered in the past 24 hours.

In Jurmala, 22 new Covid-19 cases brought the 14-day cumulative number in the seaside resort city to 223. Kekava region registered 166 cases in the past two weeks, including 15 cases in the last 24 hours. 

The municipalities with the highest 14-day cumulative number of Covid-19 cases include Riga with 3,438 cases, Daugavpils with 1,085 cases, Jelgava with 390 cases, Jurmala with 223 cases, Krustpils region with 211 cases, Kekava region with 166 cases, Jekabpils with 159 cases, Rezekne with 146 cases, Marupe region with 141 cases, Daugavpils region with 124 cases and Salaspils region with 112 cases.

Latvia's cumulative 14-day number of Covid-19 cases per 100,000 has reached 445.

Altogether 712 new Covid-19 cases were confirmed in Latvia in the past 24 hours, while five more coronavirus patients died, the Center for Disease Prevention and Control reported.

Four of the latest Covid-19 victims were in the age group of 70 to 80 years, and one in the age group of 85 to 90 years. The Covid-19 death toll has risen to 293.

With 8,748 people tested for Covid-19 in the past 24 hours, the share of positive tests was 8.1 percent. The CDC explained earlier that in the European Union this indicator is considered important because when this figure rises above 4 percent, the spread of the disease is considered to be rapid and uncontrolled.

A total of 22,816 people in Latvia have so far tested positive for Covid-19. According to estimates drawn by LETA, in the past 14 days, 8,543 new Covid-19 cases were registered.

According to the data released by the National Health Service, 101 Covid-19 patients were admitted to hospital in the past 24 hours, bringing the total number of coronavirus patients in hospitals to 722.

Of the hospitalized Covid-19 patients, 45 are severe cases, while 677 have symptoms of medium severity.

Another 71 Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital in the past 24 hours, including one patient who was transferred. In all, 1,798 Covid-19 patients have left hospital so far.
