Blasting ice also considered in Daugava to prevent flooding in Plavinas
RIGA, March 3 (LETA) - The authorities are considering blasting ice in Daugava River at Plavinas in order to prevent flooding in the area, as Plavinas Region Council's deputy chairman Aigars Lukss (Unity) told LETA.
Jekabpils Civil Defense Commission will hold a meeting later today to discuss blasting ice in the river by involving the National Armed Forces, said Lukss.
According to LETA archives, Plavinas was last flooded in 2017 when several buildings in the town were damaged. A flood in 2013 did even more damage.
In 2010, the National Armed Forces carried out a series of blasts at Plavinas to blow up ice congestion in the river.
