RIGA, June 20 (LETA) - Latvia will have received at least EUR 197 million from European Union (EU) funds by 2027 to strengthen internal security, LETA was told at the Ministry of the Interior.
Thanks to the EU, the Internal Security Fund has allocated EUR 43.1 million to Latvia for the period 2021-2027, of which EUR 32.9 million is EU funding and the rest is national co-funding.
These funds are used for information exchange between home affairs services, cross-border cooperation and the prevention and combating crime. By June 2025, 13 agreements have been concluded with recipients of the funds for the implementation of projects worth EUR 36 million, or 87 percent of the total allocation.
Financial support is also crucial in the area of asylum, migration and integration. The Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund has made EUR 46.2 million available to Latvia between 2021 and 2027, of which EUR 35.3 million is EU funding and the rest is national co-funding.
These funds have been allocated to the Common European Asylum System - improving reception and asylum procedures, legal migration and the integration of third-country nationals into society. Money is also earmarked for the return of persons to their countries of origin and the implementation of solidarity principles.
By June 2025, 16 agreements have already been concluded with beneficiaries for the implementation of projects amounting to EUR 24.6 million, representing 56 percent of the total funding available to Latvia. Latvia has received EUR 170.1 million from the Financial Instrument for Border Management and Visa Policy for the period 2021-2027, of which EUR 129.5 million is EU funding.
The funds are used for the European Integrated Border Management to strengthen the State Border Guard and modernize border control systems, as well as for the implementation of a secure and effective common visa policy.
Until June 2025, 17 agreements have been concluded with beneficiaries to implement projects worth EUR 144.8 million, representing 89 percent of the total allocation.
