Riga councilor Morozovs quits also Harmony faction

RIGA, Nov 13 (LETA) - Andris Morozovs, a member of Riga City Council who recently left the opposition Harmony party, now has decided also to quit the Harmony faction, Riga City Council lawmakers learned today.

Thus, Morozovs has become an independent lawmakers, while Harmony faction is left with ten councilors.

Morozovs told Latvian Television earlier that when he joined Harmony 12 years ago, he felt that the party might unite Latvia's society, but during the past couple of years reaching compromises has proved impossible. In his opinion, Harmony cannot be unifying force, capable of consolidating Latvia's people into a political nation.

Morozovs confirmed to LETA his departure from Harmony but would not comment on the reasons.

He acknowledged that previously there had been talk of his political activities in Latgale and cooperation with Daugavpils Mayor Andrejs Elksnins who is planning on founding a new political party. There were also speculations that Morozovs might run in the Rezekne municipal elections as Harmony's lead candidate.

Later, however, Harmony decided to nominate Morozovs for the next Riga mayor, so he only worked towards that goal.

For the time being, Morozovs has not yet decided on joining any other party, including Elksnins' party. "There is no such party and I have not received the offer," Morozovs said.

Morozovs added that he highly values Elksnins' activities in Latgale and that their cooperation has been successful so far.
