RIGA, June 27 (LETA) - Sigita Upmale, a member of Vidzeme Party and director of learning support and inclusive education at the State Education Development Agency, was on Friday elected mayor of Limbazi Municipality.

Upmale is taking over from outgoing Limbazi mayor Dagnis Straubergs from the Latvian Association of Regions who previously chaired the Salacgriva Municipal Council.

Upmale was elected Limbazi mayor by eight votes to seven.

In the vote, Upmale was supported by councilors from Vidzeme party, Union of Greens and Farmers, National Alliance, as well as New Unity. Councilors from the Latvian Association of Regions voted against her.

Straubergs, who was also nominated for mayor of Limbazi Municipality, received seven votes in his favor, while eight councilors voted against him. Only councilors from the Latvian Association of Regions voted for Straubergs.

The Latvian Association of Regions won the local elections in Limbazi municipality, according to data published by the Central Election Commission (CVK).

Counting the votes in all 20 polling stations in Limbazi municipality, the Latvian Association of Regions received 43.3 percent of the votes, winning seven seats. Vidzeme Party was in second place with 25.19 percent of the votes, winning four seats.

The Union of Greens and Farmers won 10.77 percent, winning two seats, the National Alliance won 8.72 percent, getting one seat, and the New Unity won 5.1 percent, also getting one seat at the local council.

The other parties in Limbazi Municipality did not overcome the 5 percent vote barrier.
