Riga, Jan 4 (LETA) - On December 13, last year, the Constitutional Court received an application from 20 opposition members of the Saeima, appealing the amendments to the Law on Administrative Territories, which provide for the merger of Varaklani in the Madona municipality along with this year's local elections.

According to LETA, the Constitutional Court's three-judge panel will decide within one month from the date of receipt of the application whether or not to initiate the case. In complex cases, this deadline may be extended to two months.

The application has been signed by 20 members of the Saeima from the United List, the National Alliance and Latvia First.

As reported, the Cabinet of Ministers approved the amendments for merging Varaklani Municipality with Madona Municipality in April 2024.

The heads of the municipalities of Madona and Varaklani have expressed their readiness for the merger and are already implementing some functions jointly.

LETA also reported, the previous 13th Saeima had decided to merge Varaklani Municipality with Rezekne Municipality. However, the Constitutional Court ruled this decision of the 13th Saeima unconstitutional, and Varaklani, the smallest municipality of Latvia, remained a separate territorial unit.
