LVM offers live broadcasts of nesting golden eagles

RIGA, March 12 (LETA) - With the breeding season of golden eagles underway in Latvia, a nest cam installed by Latvijas Valsts Mezi (LVM) state-forest manager has started livestreaming activities of a golden eagle pair, Spilve and Grislis, in their nest, LETA was told at the company.

The live camera project implemented by LVM for the ninth consecutive year allows interested parties to get to know the birds' breeding habits by following events in their lives. Furthermore, the project makes a significant contribution to the research of golden eagles. The nest cam project has also provided important information on golden eagles' breeding biology and partner turnover.

Ugis Bergmanis, LVM's senior environmental expert and ornithologist, says that since February the two eagles have been building their nest, supplementing it with fresh pine and spruce branches. It will take three to four weeks to find out whether the eagles will actually breed this season.

In Latvia, golden eagles nest in vast raised bogs as well as on old-growth forest islands and peninsulas. A golden eagle pair usually has several nests, which can be located ten to 20 kilometers apart from one another.
