PM evasive in comments on glitches in municipal election process

RIGA, June 5 (LETA) - Prime Minister Evika Silina (New Unity) is in close contact with the relevant authorities and government ministers to make sure authorities are coordinating among themselves and preventing potential risks in Latvia's municipal elections.

Speaking to LETA through her spokeswoman Anna Udre, the prime minister said that the Central Election Commission is in charge of supervising the electoral process.

"I am in close contact with the responsible authorities and ministers to make sure that the authorities work in a coordinated manner, identify and eliminate potential risks in a timely manner," Silina said. She added that public confidence in elections is based on clear and professional actions.

However, the prime minister did not answer the question whether and who should take responsibility for the incident on Wednesday, when the Central Election Commission claimed that the electoral system was hit by an external attack, nor how she assessed the election process so far and whether she saw any mistakes in it.

As reported, 10.2 percent of Latvia's eligible voters, or 140,428 people, cast their ballots during the first four days of early voting in this year's municipal elections, LETA was told at the Central Election Commission.

The highest voter turnout was recorded in Riga, where 12.18 percent of voters cast their ballots in the four days of early voting, followed by Vidzeme with 10.49 percent, Latgale with 8.93 percent and Zemgal with 8.56 percent voter turnout. The lowest voter turnout - 8.17 percent - was recorded in Kurzeme.

On Monday and Wednesday, the early voting process was marred by technical glitches, which affected the systems and registers necessary for the electoral process. No serious system errors were reported on Tuesday though.

Early voting will take place also from 12:00 to 15:00 on Friday.

Saturday is the official election day.
