Regional hospitals point at critical capacity in separate departments

RIGA, Oct 4 (LETA) - Regional hospitals report on critical capacity in separate departments, which might lead to restriction of services and placement of beds in hospital corridors, according to the information at the disposal of LETA.

Jekabpils regional hospital's board chairwoman Margarita Melnikovs said in a post on the hospital's internet website that the situation is critical due to capacity of the intensive care unit. This means not only necessity of additional beds, but also necessity of complicated equipment and professional staff.

In order to ensure the necessary number of beds for Covid-19 patients, other health care services will be restricted.

Jelgava hospital sees a steep growth not only in the number of Covid-19 patients, but also therapeutic patients, according to the information published by the municipality.

"We are doing everything possible in order to be able to receive patients, we have placed additional beds, but this will not be enough. We will have to make decisions on placing beds in corridors and recreation rooms," said Jelgava hospital board member Karlis Smilga.

As reported, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Health Ministry's operative medical committee meeting on Friday decided to declare the state of high readiness in the health care sector.

The ministry said that the state of high readiness means that the available personnel, material and other resources ar insufficient to ensure all necessary reactive measures and at the same time continue work of hospitals as usual.
