Ogre Region Council to be second largest local government after Riga following June 5 local elections
RIGA, Jan 26 (LETA) - A total of 683 councilors will be elected during the June 5 local elections, the Central Election Commission said on Tuesday.
In terms of the number of councilors, Ogre Region Council will be the second largest municipality after Riga.
Two city councils will be made up of thirteen council members, 22 city and town councils - of fifteen council members, sixteen region councils - of nineteen council members, and one region council - of 23 council members.
According to the law, the number of local government members is determined according to the municipality's population on the day an election is announced. The Central Election Commission announced the 2021 local elections on January 21.
Following the administrative territorial reform, local elections will take place in 41 municipalities this year: six cities and 35 regions. Riga City Council elections will not be held this year as extraordinary elections to the city council were held in 2020 and the current councilors will serve until the 2025 elections.
In the 2017 local elections, a total of 1,554 council members were elected to local governments. This year, the number is by 56 percent lower.
According to the Law on Elections of the Republic City Council and Municipality Council, in regions with a population of up to 30,000, local governments will be made up of fifteen councilors, in regions with a population of 30,001 to 60,000 - nineteen council members, and in regions with more than 60,000 residents - 23 council members. Councils in cities with a population of under 50,000 will be made up of thirteen council members, and in cities with a population of over 50,000 - fifteen council members.
During the June 5 local elections, 23 council members will be elected to Ogre Region Council, and nineteen to the councils of Aizkraukle Region, Bauska Region, Cesis Region, Dienvidkurzeme Region, Dobele Region, Jelgava Region, Jekabpils Region, Kekava Region, Madona Region, Marupe Region, Rezekne Region, Ropazi Region, Sigulda Region, Talsi Region, Tukums Region, and Valmiera Region each.
Tickets for the local elections will be submitted from March 17 to April 6.
