Farmers' losses caused by adverse weather conditions this year estimated at EUR 100 million

RIGA, Oct 16 (LETA) - By the end of September, the Rural Support Service had received farmers' reports on 87,307 hectares of crops damaged by this year's adverse weather conditions, and the total preliminary losses are currently estimated at EUR 100.124 million, the Agriculture Ministry informed LETA.

84,987 hectares of crops have been damaged by heavy rains: grain, oilseeds, legumes, grassland, fruit and vegetables, as well as 6,533 hectares of uncultivated farmland.

The spring frosts damaged 2,320 hectares of crops, mostly blackcurrants, apple trees, blueberries, sea buckthorn and pears.

In the meantime, the Rural Support Service still continues to receive farmers' reports on crops damaged by adverse weather conditions this year, said the Agriculture Ministry.

The ministry emphasizes that every report is important to ensure an objective assessment of the situation, and that the ministry has complete and up-to-date information on losses in all affected sectors.

The Agriculture Ministry reminds that farmers can submit their reports through the Rural Support Service's electronic application system or the mobile app.

As reported, at an extraordinary meeting on August 5, the government declared a state of emergency in agriculture in the entire territory of Latvia until November 4, 2025 in order to overcome damage done by frosts, rains and floods this year.

That is why, at the end of September, the European Commission decided to grant EUR 4.2 million in emergency aid from the European Union to Latvian farmers to tackle the damage caused by this year's adverse weather conditions, based on information provided by the Ministry of Agriculture.
