RIGA, June 7 (LETA) - For Latvia's Development party has 84 lawmakers elected in 24 local councils, the party's representative Edgars Barbaks told LETA.

He said that these were the first local elections when For Latvia's Development had prepared such a broad proposal, and the result is historically the best for the party.

In a number of municipalities, the party has won the elections, even winning the majority of votes - Livani, Valka, Aizkraukle, Ropazi, Gulbene and Jekabpils counties. In other local governments the party has won enough representation in order to sit down at the table with other partners and agree on the future local councils.

MEP and For Latvia's Development co-chairman Ivars Ijabs said that this is a historical moment for the party as from a party represented at the Saeima and Riga City Council has turned into a party represented across Latvia.

The party's co-chairman and Environment Protection and Regional Development Minister Arturs Toms Pless said that such a result reflects the party's work. "The good results prove that the administrative territorial reform has been approved, and voters in many municipalities have granted mandates to the party representatives for implementation of the reform," said Pless.

The party ran in 26 municipalities for the local elections on Saturday. The campaign is still ongoing in Rezekne county where the elections will be held in September.
