Riga proposes to reduce room temperature, switch off street lights as energy saving measures

RIGA, Sept 6 (LETA) - Riga has proposed to reduce room temperature in municipal institutions and switch of street lights as energy saving measures, as lawmakers discussed at the Riga City Council housing and environment committee meeting today.

The proposals have been prepared by the Riga Energy Agency.

Municipal institutions, including education establishments, could reduce room temperature to +20.5 degrees C, and where it is possible, room temperature could be reduced by four more degrees at nights and during weekends, when the premises are not in use.

There are different proposals about the times when street lights could be switched off at night. Decorative lighting of buildings could be switched off as well as lighting of stadiums when they are not in use.

Also, there is a proposal to change the old bulbs to LED lights.

The committee chairman Edmunds Cepuritis (Progressives/For) explained that the proposed energy saving measures could save up to EUR 9 million in the municipal budget.
