Eglitis sees increase of unemployment level in some cities
RIGA, March 21 (LETA) - Unemployment level might grow in separate cities, Welfare Minister Gaits Eglitis (Conservatives) said in an interview with the Latvian public radio on Monday.
In his words, so far there is no significant increase of unemployment levels, but it might happen in separate cities, for example, Daugavpils.
"We are taking all necessary measures from the part of the State Employment Agency (NVA), we are proactive in helping these people to re-qualify, obtain new knowledge so that they can return in the job market as soon as possible," the politician said.
It is not planned to change the unemployment size or term of payment because there are enough vacancies, said the minister.
As reported, Latvia's actual unemployment rate was 7.6 percent at the end of February, the same as in the previous month, according to the Central Statistical Bureau's latest Labor Force Survey.
Unemployment in Latvia's male population remained unchanged from January at 7 percent, while joblessness in the women population declined 0.1 percentage points to 8.1 percent.
The unemployment rate registered by the State Employment Agency fell 0.1 percentage points in February to 6.8 percent at the end of the month.
It was also reported recently that Daugavpils Lokomotivju Remonta Rupnica train engine repair plant might have to lay off about 300 employees if it does not receive assistance from the state, according to the plant.
