Daugavpils wants to promote region, strengthen cooperation in run for title of European Capital of Culture in 2027

RIGA, Feb 4 (LETA) - In the run for the title European Capital of Culture 2027, Daugavpils wants to promote the region and strengthen cooperation with Latgale municipalities, said the city's deputy mayor Janis Duksinskis (Latgale Party) in a press conference.
In his words, the city has accepted the challenge because the title and running for the title will ensure additional publicity and international recognition.
"Daugavpils sees this process on a broader scale, wishing to promote the whole regions and strengthen cooperation with Latgale municipalities. One of the goals is to use culture, uniting Daugavpils, Latgale, Latvia and Europe," he said.
As reported, Latvian local governments may submit their applications for running for the European Capital of Culture to the Culture Ministry by June 4.
In 2027, the title of European Capital of Culture will be awarded to one Latvian city and one Portuguese city. This is the second opportunity for Latvia to receive the title of European Capital of Culture. In 2014, the title was awarded to two European cities - the capital of Latvia, Riga and Umea in Sweden.
So far, Liepaja, Jurmala, Cesis, Jekabpils, Kuldiga, Daugavpils and Jelgava, Jurmala together with Tukums county and Valmiera have voiced their readiness to run for the title.
