Jurmala to attempt to pump stagnant water towards the sea
RIGA, July 31 (LETA) - Jurmala will try to pump the stagnant water from Monday's storm towards the sea, Rita Sproge, chairwoman of the Jurmala City Council (Greens/Farmers), told Latvian Radio this morning.
As rains have subsided, the water level in the city has dropped slightly, but not significantly, the politician noted. Today, a heavy-duty machine has been arranged to pump the stagnant water from Kapu Street to the sea.
Sproge said that the municipality will review and try to improve the drainage systems. She stressed that solutions must be found to the problems, as the meteorologists predict that similar storms may be experienced quite regularly in the future.
The head of the Jurmala City Council estimated that, in total, the damage to the city and its inhabitants' property will be very high, but could not yet be quantified. She reminded that the municipality encourages residents to take photographs of the damage. However, residents will be able to hand over broken trees to the municipality, which will gradually collect them.
As reported, Jurmala was hit considerably hard during the Sunday/Monday storm, which caused substantial damage.
