Saeima supports in principle bill banning Russian and Belarusian citizens from purchasing real estate in Latvia
RIGA, Feb 20 (LETA) - The Saeima today supported in principle draft Law Restricting Transactions Posing Threat to National Security, which stipulates that Russian and Belarusian citizens, or legal entities owned by them, would not be allowed to buy real estate in Latvia.
The aim of the bill submitted by New Unity is to prevent actions harmful or dangerous to Latvia's national interests, as well as circumvention of international sanctions.
The ban on purchases of real estate in Latvia will apply to natural and legal persons of the two aggressor states and legal entities established in Russia and Belarus or whose beneficial owners are citizens of those countries.
The restrictions will not apply to persons who have obtained the status of permanent resident of the European Union or a permanent residence permit in Latvia.
