Riga City Council demands clarity from government in relation to changes in support to Ukrainian civilians

RIGA, May 25 (LETA) - The Riga City Council demand clarity from the government in relation to changes in support to Ukrainian civilians, the council said in a press conference today.

Riga Vice Mayor Linda Ozola (Conservatives) underscored that the local government will do everything possible to provide support to Ukrainian refugees and will comply with all government's decisions, but it is necessary to explain what decisions are being prepared and when they will take force.

She said that a situation when social workers or municipal police are those who have to explain last-minute changes in support to Ukrainians is unacceptable.

Even if the support has to be changed, this should be communicated and Ukrainian refugees should be informed about it. The Ukrainian embassy in Latvia should be informed so that it can further distribute information to those refugees who are still looking for asylum abroad, said Ozola.

Riga City Council social affairs committee chairman Viesturs Kleinbergs (Progressives/For) called on the government to make the decisions on the necessary changes so that local government have time to prepare for them.

He said that the current decision to extend support for 30 days is just a plaster. If the approach to decision making is not changed, the same situation again will repeat in 30 days, when the term is about to expire and there is no clarity about future support.

As reported, until May 24, in total of 15,034 Ukrainian refugees have been registered in the Riga support center, the Riga City Council said in a press conference today.
