Teachers' trade union agrees on termless strike in September

RIGA, June 20 (LETA) - The Latvian Trade Union of Education and Science Employees (LIZDA) will call on school teachers to start a termless strike in September, LETA learned from LIZDA head Inga Vanaga.

Vanaga said that the trade union will no longer organize pickets or rallies because the "real face" of the decision makers has been demonstrated as politicians have been unable to find a compromise and meet the demands of the trade union during protests.

LIZDA council today unanimously voted on a termless strike in September. Vanaga said that this will not be a warning strike for a certain period of time, it will continue for as long as the trade union's demands are not heard.

Vanaga reminded that in 2015 there was a one-day teachers' strike. The trade union now is confident that a strike will be efficient only if it is termless.

LIZDA will also turn to local governments, heads of schools, representatives of universities, and parents. She underscored that everybody should understand that teachers like their work, but the current work load makes it impossible for teachers to meet the requirements of the new study content.

As reported, during its picket last Thursday LIZDA had not managed to achieve guarantees that its demands will be met.

After a meeting with Education and Science Minister Anita Muizniece (Conservatives) Vanaga said that the ministry did not agree with any of the trade union's demands. The three main demands were balanced work load, increase of wages in line with the principles set in the Education Law and fair distribution of funding.
