Latvia so far has not turned to EU asking for assistance on eastern border

RIGA, Aug 25 (LETA) - Latvia so far has not turned to the EU, asking for assistance with illegal migrant flow on Latvia's eastern border, LETA learned from the Interior Ministry.

The ministry said that, considering the current situation on the Latvian-Belarussian border, Latvia is able to tackle the situation with its own resources.

At present, the Border Guard is receiving help from the State Police, the National Armed Forces and Frontex experts.

As reported, Lithuanian Interior Minister Agne Bilotaite said earlier that Lithuania's chances to receive EU funding for building a physical barrier on the border with Belarus in order to stop the illegal migration are optimistic.

As reported, taking into consideration the steeply increasing numbers of illegal immigrants trying to cross into Latvia from Belarus, the government has declared a state of emergency that will run from August 11 until November 10 in the following municipalities: Ludza Region, Kraslava Region, Augsdaugava Region, and the City of Daugavpils.

Since August 10, a total of 544 persons have been stopped from crossing from Belarus into Latvia.
