Future Riga City Council coalition to sign cooperation agreement on Thursday
Riga, June 18 (LETA) - On Thursday, the factions forming the future Riga City Council coalition - the Progressives, the National Alliance, the New Unity and the United List will sign a cooperation agreement and action plan for Riga, Progressives press secretary Leticija Liva Lukjanska informed LETA.
"This coalition is united by the belief that Riga should be a city where everyone feels safe, fits in and is listened to. It was important for me to ensure that the coalition was built on equal grounds, and we have achieved that. The negotiations have been successful, with partners agreeing on a common vision for the future of Riga as a Latvian, European and open city," said Viesturs Kleinbergs (Progressives), the candidate for the Mayor of Riga.
Alongside the cooperation agreement, the coalition's Action Plan 2025-2029 will be signed, which sets out the main tasks and priorities for Riga's development.
The aim of both documents is to ensure efficient, stable, legal and professional work of the Riga City Council administration during the entire term of the Council, the politicians said.
The partners have agreed on the implementation of common objectives, collegial decision-making, ethical principles, mutual accountability and clear procedures for coordination.
As reported, the future Riga City Council coalition plans to take decisions in solidarity, but will also allow for differences of opinion in voting, according to the working version of the draft coalition agreement available to the LETA.
The coalition promises to establish a constructive cooperation in which all partners are equal and decisions are taken on a collegial basis.
Coalition partners will be expected to respect generally accepted norms of ethics, have mutual respect, trust, collegiality and integrity. In addition, the leadership of the City Council must set an example of solidarity.
To ensure cooperation between the factions, a Cooperation Council will be set up, chaired by the council chairman.
As reported, the initiative to form the new governing coalition has been taken by the Progressives, whose mayoral candidate is Viesturs Kleinbergs. Coalition talks are being held with the National Alliance, the New Unity and the United List. In total, such a coalition would have 34 votes out of 60.
