Massive Covid-19 outbreak reported at nursing home in Engure region

RIGA, Jan 11 (LETA) - A total of 64 employees and 184 clients have been diagnosed with Covid-19 at the Rauda nursing home in the Engure region, the nursing home's director Dace Randoha informed LETA.

In her words, the nursing home has 156 employees and it is home to 265 seniors.

Randoha revealed than 21 clients have died at the nursing home since Christmas and two seniors have been hospitalized. She did not specify these people's diagnoses though.

The first Covid-19 cases at the Rauda nursing home was confirmed on December 22 last year, when two employees and ten clients tested positive for the virus. Since December 15, the nursing home's employees are tested twice a week and clients twice a month.

Randoha said that around 15 of the 64 infected employees have symptoms and they are feeling sick, but the rest only learned about their infections when they received the test results.

The director said that all employees have been provided with personal protective equipment (PPE) but that the virus still found its way into the nursing home.

She also admitted that since many employees are either sick or in quarantine, the healthy employees have to work longer hours than permitted under the Labor Law but that they will be remunerated for the extra hours.

As reported, Engure recorded 63 new coronavirus cases on Sunday as the 14-day number of Covid-19 cases in the region reached 140.
