Campaign saves over 1,300 amphibians in Latvia

RIGA, May 10 (LETA) - An environmental campaign Mission Toad. Save the Prince! helped save over 1,323 amphibians, including 793 common toads, during this year's active migration period in Latvia, LETA was told at the Nature Conservation Agency.

The agency's spokeswoman Elina Ezerina said that each year thousands of migrating amphibians get hit by motor vehicles and die as they try to reach their spawning grounds.

"This year, more  than a thousand lives were rescued thanks to volunteers' involvement," Ezerina said thanking the volunteers who devoted their spare time to helping toads and other amphibians to cross dangerous road sections in all Latvia.

The Nature Conservation Agency started to identify the road sections most dangerous to toads already in February. During the migration season, volunteers were invited to help amphibians cross 41 marked road sections.

Over 100 people, including several families with children, joined the amphibian saving campaign, the Nature Conservation Agency said.
