Six refugees sent from Riga to Gulbene, more than 50 refuse to leave Riga

RIGA, July 1 (LETA) - Today, six Ukrainian refugees registered at the Riga refugee center have been sent from Riga to Gulbene, while 50 others refused to leave the Latvian capital, LETA learned from the Riga City Council.

In total, by 3 p.m. today 64 refugees from Ukraine registered at the Riga refugee center, including eight children and two families with pets.

As of July 1, Riga cannot accommodate any more refugees, therefore the Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) who is in charge of accommodating Ukrainian refugees, is looking for accommodations in other municipalities.

Six persons were sent to Gulbene, while others refused from accommodation in other municipalities.

At present, 1,800 Ukrainian refugees were accommodated in tourist facilities in Riga. As of today, refugees are moved to cheaper accommodation places.

As reported, after failing to receive financial support from the central government, Riga will stop admitting more Ukraine war refugees from July 1 and will only continue to provide assistance to the refugees already living in the city, Riga Mayor Martins Stakis (For/Progressives) said at a news conference Tuesday.

The Riga mayor said that the state allocation for the accommodation of the refugees will be substantially reduced from July 1. The daily support will be cut to EUR 3.5 per refugee, which is insufficient to survive in Riga. Tourist accommodation establishments will not be able to accommodate refugees for such a price, the mayor said.
