RIGA, Feb 4 (LETA) - In order to improve traffic safety in Riga, the local authority plans to install 11 new traffic lights in the city this year, LETA was told at the press office of Riga City Council.

To ensure safe pedestrian movement and crossing the streets, pedestrian traffic lights will be built on Lacplesa Street near Rusina Street and Abrenes Street, on Gustava Zemgala Avenue near Vairoga Street, on Juglas Street between Udelu and Bikernieku Streets, as well as on Melnsila Street near building No 21.

Traffic lights are planned at the intersection of Pernavas and Varnu Streets, at the intersection of Bikernieku and Burtnieku Streets, at the intersection of Gimnastikas, Vaiņodes and Tadaiku streets and at the intersection of Dzelzavas and Kaivas Streets.

Existing traffic lights will be reconstructed at the intersection of Eksporta, Muitas and 11 Novembra Streets and on Duntes Street at building No 8.

Construction of the traffic lights could start in the second half of the summer, once the procurement procedures and contracts have been finalized.

A total of EUR 2 million has been earmarked for this project.
