RIGA, Mar 22 (LETA) - Edgars Treibergs (Latvian Farmers' Union), board chairman of the Latvian Council for Cooperation of Agriculturalist Organizations (LOSP), was elected chairman of the Garkalne regional council on Monday.
Out of the 15 councilors participating in the elections, ten voted for Treibergs, four voted against him and one councilor abstained.
Treibergs was the only candidate nominated for the vacant post of Garkalne mayor. Before the vote, Treibergs said that he had informed the Agriculture Ministry about his intention to run for Garkalne mayor and that the Corruption Prevention Bureau (KNAB) had allowed him to combine the two jobs.

The Garkalne regional council had to elected a new chairman after former Garkalne mayor Alvis Zirins (Harmony) resigned on March 1.
Zirins was elected Garkalne mayor in March 2020 after Martins Gunars Bauze-Krastins (Latvian Farmers' Union) resigned as the region's long-standing mayor.
