Two cases of African swine fever reported in Latvia's wild boar population this week
RIGA, June 18 (LETA) - Two new cases of African swine fever (ASF) have been recorded in Latvia's wild boar population in the outgoing week, the Food and Veterinary Service reported.
This week, ASF was found in one wild boar in the municipality of Rumba in Kuldiga Region and one in the municipality of Nautreni in Rezekne Region.
So far this year ASF has been found in 141 wild boars in 51 municipalities of 29 regions of Latvia.
The ASF outbreak started in Latvia in June 2014 not far from the border with Belarus.
African swine fever is an extremely dangerous and contagious virus infection affecting pigs. If an infected pig is found in a farm, all pigs in the particular farm have to be culled, which means big losses for farmers.
