Court dismisses lawsuit contesting results of local elections in Liepaja

RIGA, June 20 (LETA) - Administrative Regional Court on Friday dismissed a lawsuit contesting the result of this year's local elections in Liepaja.

The court rejected the request filed by Jelena Osipova, the leader of the Russian Union of Latvia (LKS) in Liepaja, to invalidate the Central Election Commission's decision to approve the election results, LETA learned at the court.

A total of 19,991 voters cast their ballots in the Liepaja elections, and 19,819 of the ballot papers were recognized to be valid. The LKS received 929 votes, or 4.65 percent. The party was left 62 votes short of the necessary number to surpass the 5 percent vote barrier for winning representation on the city council.

Osipova believes that the missing votes were "stolen from the list" or were lost due to a technical error.

The Central Election Commission rejected Osipova's complaint as the applicant failed to provide any evidence to substantiate her claims. Osipova then filed a lawsuit.

As reported, vote counting following the June 7 elections in Latvia was marred by glitches in the electoral system, but eventually all the votes were counted manually and the election results were approved.

President Edgars Rinkevics said that no information had been received from national security services or other competent authorities that would cast doubt on the results of the elections or their legality.
