CDC declares flu epidemic in Latvia over
RIGA, April 24 (LETA) - The Center for Disease Prevention and Control (CDC) has declared the influenza epidemic in Latvia over as of this Friday.
According to the data of the CDC monitoring of flu and acute upper respiratory tract infections, during the last three weeks, percentage of positive influenza tests at the National Reference Laboratory for Microbiology in the last three weeks has been below 10 percent.
According to the laboratory's data, the share of positive flu tests was 7.7 percent last week and 7.2 percent the week before last.
Last week the rate of clinically diagnosed flu cases averaged at 88.9 per 100,000 population.
The CDC noted, however, that flu prevalence is still widespread, with cases recorded in nine out of ten monitoring areas last week - Rezekne, Jekabpils, Gulbene, Daugavpils, Jurmala, Jelgava, Ventspils and Liepaja.
The CDC noted that flu incidence has been high this season and the epidemic has lasted longer than usual - for 19 weeks. This compares with 15 weeks in the previous season and 12 weeks in the 2022-2023 season.
The start of the influenza epidemic was announced on December 19, 2024. This season, as in the previous one, the highest number of influenza cases occurred in children under 14 years of age.
