Head of Central Election Commission steps down

RIGA, June 12 (LETA) - On Wednesday evening, Kristine Saulite, the Chair of the Central Election Commission (CVK), decided to resign from her post, LETA has learned.
Saulite has addressed the Saeima Presidium with a resignation letter.
She thanked the Saeima for the trust shown in her at the beginning of 2023, when she was entrusted with the post of Chair of the Central Election Commission.
However, she points out that in recent days, after listening to various opinions and accusations, she has found herself "caught up in a political maelstrom and intrigues, receiving accusations and accusations about the failings of other officials".
Saulite has therefore decided to resign from her post as of Thursday "in order to remain true to the values she holds dear - honesty, fairness, professionalism and democracy".
Saulite thanks all partners for the work done together.
Earlier in the day, the ruling coalition factions of the Saeima had agreed on removing Saulite from the post of the Central Election Commission chairperson.
As reported, vote counting following last weekend's municipal elections in Latvia was marred by technical glitches, which were reported in the electoral system already during early voting.
Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics said on Sunday that the Central Election Commission (CVK) and the State Digital Development Agency (VDAA) failed in organizing local elections.
